Findings of the eagles in the Chernihiv Polissya

Sep 27, 2014 / Comment

The northern part of Chernihiv Region, so-called the Chernihiv Polissya /map/, is one of the best regions of Ukraine for Short-toed Eagles’ habitation. These lands, rich in Grass Snakes, Vipers, other reptiles and also in old pine forests, provide the eagles with good conditions for foraging and nesting. An expert in Ukrainian birds of prey, Sergey Domashevsky, during the expedition in 2009 has recorded several probable territorial pairs of the eagles there. Some of them were observed between the Sozh, the Dnieper rivers and Zamglay Bog /map/.

SKEETER A, SIMON A, MOROZ V, PISMENNYI K. 2011-2014. Chernihiv PolissyaThis year a local birdwatcher, Artem Skeeter, has found Short-toed Eagles’ nest at a place where he saw them during a few years before. Artem has discovered the nest just after finding of one old tail feather under a perch at the breeding site.30.08.14 : an adult male Short-toed Eagle gives a snake to the juvenile not far from the nesting tree He has managed to take a video of feeding the juvenile eagle by its father on a pine within the site. Also photos of the birds have been taken there in 2011-2012 and this year by Artem and by Andrew Simon, Viktor Moroz and me. This year’s juvenile could already fly on August 9. The date is the earliest known in Northern Ukraine for the last 10 years. On September 9 another juvenile Short-toed Eagle, judging by all, an offspring of the neighbour pair, was observed in the hovering flight over typical hunting grounds far from forests, that is unusually early for this region too.

JOUBERT B. 2014. Haute-Loire

We would like to bring to your attention the 5th gallery of photos taken by Bernard Joubert at a nest of Short-toed Eagle in Haute-Loire /map/. Although the pair has eventually occupied another (last year’s) nest for the breeding, Bernard’s camera has captured scenes of the early nesting behaviour of the birds. Thanks to the researcher, we have a possibility to see unique moments of this eagles’ life once again.

PELSY F. 2011-2013. Sologne

We would like to express our gratitude to Frédéric Pelsy for sharing these not numerous, but marvelous pictures of Short-toed Eagles in Sologne (France) /map/. The male and the females are well recognizable by colouration of their plumage which is seen in detail. Because of that several of the photos have also been added to our Age/Sex handbook.

PISMENNYI K. 2013. Northern Ukraine

This gallery contains some photos of Short-toed Eagle taken in Northern Ukraine this year. As usual, it is planned to be updated with new pictures if I manage to take something interesting. They may be not as of high quality as of interest for Short-toed Eagle watchers. That is why all of them are commented in detail. Single eagles are named individually with alphanumeric code, for example: “A11” means bird “A” of the gallery of 2011, but “A” without a number here means that the individual has not been marked yet in previous galleries.

PISMENNYI K. 2012. Northern Ukraine

Just like last year I would like to share some photos, which, though have not perfect quality, can tell something about different aspects of Short-toed Eagles’ life as here, in Northern Ukraine, so in general. Also like last year the photo gallery will be updated with new images during the season. Every update will be described in comments.

Photos of Short-toed Eagles of certainly known age and sex

Dear Circaetus gallicus lovers and researchers! Let us, please, invite you to contribute your photos (info@short-toed-eagle.net) of the Eagles of age and sex known for certain. These photos will be inserted into the special gallery which has been created on initiative of Francesco Petretti. We aim to make something like an online handbook to help to describe differences between sexes and ages of Short-toed Eagle and finally to make their field identification easier. Each contributed photo should be supplied with information, examples of which can already be seen below each inserted image.

Short-toed Eagles in Ukraine in 2011
Although some photos taken by me this year in Ukraine aren’t of the highest quality, they’re interesting (at least in my opinion) and they can’t wait for the autumn to be put on the site. That is why the regular annual gallery is published right now in a bit different format. It is going to be renewed during the season of observations of Short-toed Eagles.
