Just one more annual overview of Short-toed Snake Eagle monitoring in the Cévennes National Park /map/ and Lozère for 2016:

The program of ringing Short-toed Eagles is continuing in Hungary; 4 individuals were tagged this year:

3 chicks were ringed in the Zemplén Hills /map/ by István Béres (ringer), József Serfőző (climber), Zoltán Turny and Gábor Papp, nests were on Pinus sylvestris. Ring codes used: blue ring with white letters; A28, A29, A30.

1 chick was ringed in the Pilis Hills /map/ by Attila Feldhoffer (ringer), Vince Schwartz and Levente Kossuth (climber). There the pair has been nesting on oak (Quercus petraea). Ring code used: A41.

The presented article refers to the following: in spring ’81 the author discovered that a nest found in the previous year in the Pilis Mountains /map/ had fallen down. They built an artificial nest and kept watching the site. Later, they observed the pair occupying the nest and found egg remains under it on April 25, so the egg laying took place a few days earlier. It was the earliest known egg-laying of this species at that time. Since the pair was holding the territory they checked back in June 4 and found the female incubating. Despite the repeated egg-laying the fledgling left the nest early August.

This time the traditional summary on monitoring and conservation of Short-toed Eagles in the Cévennes National Park /map/ is supplemented with the separate English translation through the kind help of Ferenc Papp and Gábor Papp who translated the original report from French to Hungarian and then from Hungarian to English:

Returning to the important topic of correct identification of differently aged Short-toed Eagles in the nature, Gábor Papp has tried to briefly describe the main characters of juvenile, 2, 3 and 4 cy eagles, and also visual differences between adult males and females. His description are illustrated with the corresponding images. Here is two versions of the text, Hungarian and English ones:

This is just a small photo gallery of ringing Short-toed Eagle chicks in the Zemplén Mountains /map/. The juveniles were ringed by István Béres; the climber and the photographer was József Serfőző.

Gábor Papp reports that 4 eaglets were colour-ringed there this year and also ringing of 2 more was orginized by Zoltán Turny (MME/Birdlife) in Transdanubia /map/ and was done by rangers of Danube-Ipoly National Park at the following sites:
› Vértes – by Antal Klébert and István Staudinger; this is the 2^nd year that the pair use this nest on an oak;
› the Budai Hills – by Bíró Sándor and Zoltán Turny; this is the 4^th year in a row of breeding in this nest on a pine.
