Records at the species range boundaries

Aug 31, 2018 / Comment

Immature Short-toed Eagle in UK in 2014, by Roger StarbuckSeveral records of Short-toed Snake Eagle at the boundaries of the species range were reported this summer. Local birders informed about observation of an eagle again in the United Kingdom, at Ashdown Forest /map/ in East Sussex: it was seen several times since June 21st. Unfortunately, the age of that bird has remained unknown. Four years earlier, a young Short-toed Eagle had been observed at Morden Bog /map/, near Wareham.

Photos of Short-toed Eagle by Liudmila Pozhidaeva on the Birds of Siberia websiteAt the opposite side of the range’s northern boundary, not far from Barnaul /map/, the administrative centre of the Altai Krai, a Short-toed Eagle was recorded this year too. Photos of an adult Short-toed Eagle female by Askar Isabekov on the Birds of Kazakhstan websitePhotos of it are available on the Birds of Siberia website. This time it was an adult bird, as well as the previous one observed in 2016. Also, this summer has brought many encounters with ST Eagles to birders in Kazakhstan, just enjoy the pictures.

Short-toed Snake Eagles breed in Lithuania again

Jul 30, 2018 / Comment

Young Short-toed Snake Eagle in the nestAfter a 100-year break, Short-toed Eagle breeding in Lithuania has been reported (Lt) again! The last time their nest had been found by Prof. Tadas Ivanauskas in Varėna District in 1915. Now, Eugenijuis Drobelis discovered the nest in the same district near Čepkeliai marsh /map/ on July 23, 2018. This return might mean the species’ spreading to the NW there.

A report on the rehabilitation of a Short-toed Eagle

Jun 30, 2018 / Comment

Although, this paper is rather old, it can be considered as a good example of a report on Short-toed Eagle rehabilitation. If all similar cases were described in such a detailed way, our knowledge on sexing and ageing of Short-toed Eagles would be much deeper:

Distribution of breeding pairs in Central and NE Italy

ST Eagle nesting in central southern Switzerland

Dec 17, 2017 / Comment

The next recently published article is dedicated to tracking a breeding attempt of Short-toed Eagles in the Canton of Ticino /map/:

• Filippo RAMPAZZI, Luca PAGANO, 2017 – La nidificazione del biancone Circaetus gallicus nel Cantone Ticino (Svizzera) [Nesting of Short-toed Eagle in the Canton of Ticino (Switzerland)] // Bollettino della Società ticinese di scienze naturali, 105: 77-85. – Short-toed Eagle. file (It) {rough translation}.

The record of successful breeding after the long absence of such data for central southern Switzerland can be considered as an evidence of Short-toed Eagle spread in Switzerland and northern Italy in recent years.

Our sincere thanks to Luca Pagano for kind sharing the paper!
