New interview about the biology and current conservation situation of Short-toed Eagle in Italy has been given by Francesco Petretti. Like two previous interviews about Short-toed Eagles it is published on the Interviews section of the European Raptors website.
The first Short-toed Eagle in Maremma /map/ was observed on the 5th of March in Ansedonia (Grosseto). On the 14th of March 1 pair was in its nesting territory in Tolfa hills (Roma)/map/: the male was performing a “wing flap display”. The weather now is fine but the temperature is low and approaches zero degree during the night. No snakes at all, maybe the eagles are able to survive without food for few days or to rely on toads?
On the 15th of March I joined a group of hundreds of birdwatchers and ornithologists spotting Short-toed Eagles migrating over Arenzano (Genua, Liguria) in North-West Italy: more than 250 specimens were observed on Sunday. A flock consisted of 20 birds.
