Age-related timing of Short-toed Eagle migration

Jan 2, 2017 / Comment

Many thanks to Luca Baghino for sharing this fresh article dedicated to ongoing studies of Short-toed Eagle migration from regions of Europe:

Location of the study areas in northwest Italy and GeorgiaNicolantonio AGOSTINI, Luca BAGHINO, Wouter M. G. VANSTEELANT & Michele PANUCCIO, 2016 – Age-related timing of Short-toed Snake Eagle Circaetus gallicus migration along detoured and direct flyways // Bird Study, DOI: 10.1080 / 00063657.2016.1264362. – Short-toed Eagle. file (En).

A fact file on Short-toed Eagle by Ela Foundation

Dec 28, 2016 / Comment

Ela Foundation fact file on Short-toed EagleThe presented fact file is quite outstanding because it is mainly based on information collected in India, a region with the great sedentary Short-toed Eagle population. Despite the fact that the species biology in the region is definitely of great interest, too few data on it is currently available. Consequently, this information sheet contains details which could be fairly surprising for European researchers. Secondly, this is simply a good example of an informative poster. The file can be found on the Ela Foundation website.

Natural effects on Short-toed Eagle migration

Two papers about effects of the wind and the large water surface on Short-toed Eagle migration have been prepared by Spanish and Italian researchers and released this year:

• Javier VIDAL-MATEO, Ugo MELLONE, Pascual LÓPEZ-LÓPEZ, Javier DE LA PUENTE, Clara GARCÍA-RIPOLLÉS, Ana BERMEJO, Vicente URIOS, 2016 – Wind effects on the migration routes of trans-Saharan soaring raptors: geographical, seasonal, and interspecific variation // Current Zoology, 62: pp. 89-97. – Short-toed Eagle. file (En). This thorough article can be found on the University of Valencia website.

Nicolantonio AGOSTINI, Marco GUSTIN & Michele PANUCCIO, 2016 – Short-toed snake eagles Circaetus gallicus (Gmelin, 1788) (Aves: Accipitridae) approaching a water barrier show reverse direction of migration // Italian Journal of Zoology, DOI: 10.1080 / 11250003.2016. 1240833. – Short-toed Eagle. file (En) /map/. Meeting in Roquefixade (France), a brief review

Oct 30, 2016 / Comment
Roquefixade: a lot of sites for Short-toed Snake EaglesParticipants of the 4th Circaetus meeting

After Langeac (2004), Nadaillac (2008), and Florac (2012) the 4th Circaetus meeting took place in Roquefixade (the Ariège Department), on October 8th and 9th, 2016. Forty naturalists involved in the monitoring of the species, found themselves there at the invitation of Nature Midi-Pyrénées and LPO Mission Rapaces, to share their experience of the studies. The total number of the meeting participants was about fifty. The program illustrated the diversity of birders’ approaches within their means and goals.
